Court Hearing for Food Not Bombs Cofounder, Arrested for Spray Painting Blue Squares in SC
On Tuesday, August 25, the founder of Food Not Bombs, Keith McHenry, was arrested and charged with a felony along with local hero, Abbi Samuels, for spraypainting markings on the sidewalk that “‘imitate’ actual city authorized markings.” The action took place in support of local artists who are being driven off the sidewalks by a gentrifying police policy.

A 59-year-old Santa Cruz woman and a 58-year-old Santa Cruz man were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of felony vandalism and conspiracy to commit a crime after they spray painted sidewalks on Pacific Avenue, police said.
The blue corner marks that Abbi Samuels and Jonathan Keith McHenry made were similar to official city markings for street vendor areas, said Santa Cruz police spokeswoman Joyce Blaschke. Authorities noticed the 33 markings and caught the pair by reviewing surveillance footage, Blaschke said.
“In addition to vandalizing the city sidewalks, the act undermines the city’s program to establish safe, orderly and fair use of the downtown sidewalk space,” said Blaschke.
The city’s Economic Development Department maps and keeps track of authorized spots for street vendors. Leaders from that department recently toured the 1200 block to 1500 block of Pacific Avenue to point out the unauthorized marks.
The cleanup cost about $950, Blaschke said.
McHenry was arrested about 10:50 p.m. near Santa Cruz City Hall on Center Street and Samuels was arrested there about one hour later.
