HAYWARD, CA — Last January 1 marked the 6th anniversary of the murder of Oscar Grant III by then BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle. Turning this tragedy into triumph, the Oscar Grant Foundation led by Wanda Johnson, continues to give back to the community. Johnson has traveled across the nation helping over grief-stricken mothers and families who experience similar caseslike Oscar. Most recently traveling to New York to support Gwen Carr, mother of Eric Garner, and to St.Louis to be with Lezley McSpadden, mother of Mike Brown both on their one year anniversary of the unarmed murders of their sons by law enforcement. The Oscar Grant Foundation want to make a difference with service and testimony to experience.

As in years past, Oscar’s family, friends, the Oakland community Oscar Grant Foundation has spent time giving charity around the Bay Area. This weekend is the 2nd annual School Supply drive, which will give away over 500 backpacks with supplies to local students in need of help! This has been a great year honoring Oscar Grant III. Studies show, students do better with proper supplies to function in the classroom!

The Oscar Grant Foundation also enjoyed the first victory with their boys basketball team, named appropriately, ‘OG Ballers’ who placed 2nd in their division of the AAU basketball league. The basketball team was established to combat obesity, mentorship, educate, and to be a safe place for at-risk youth. The OG Ballers are a great team for the Bay Area, making a name for itself, their coaching staff, and its program.

Additionally, The Oscar Grant awarded two recipients 500.00 Scholarships for college. The scholarships were only one fraction of ways the foundation strives to help students in need.Students Taahirah Khalfani, and Deja Jackson were both accepted into four year Universities, and they exhibited high grade point average. Their award came from their phenomenal essays about bettering the relations between police and citizens, and had commendable community service hours.

The annual school supply drive will be located at Palma Ceia, 27679 Melbourne Ave, Hayward, CA 94545, August 15, 2015 from 12-2pm while supplies last. For more information, contact above information.
