Rodeo Calves Brutalized; Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead Watches and Yawns

Wyoming Gov. CHEYENNE, WY – Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead apparently condoned animal cruelty this week on at least two occasions when calves were brutalized in the controversial calf-roping event at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo – in fact, the governor called CFD the "Daddy" of all rodeos, although it has a reputation of being the most cruel and brutal rodeos in the U.S. The rodeo ends Sunday.

Gov. Mead, who admits he was a youth rodeo participant, watched as the calf was yanked backwards in the air by its neck, and struggled in pain to get to his feet. Eventually, the calf got up, but couldn't run without a noticeable pain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4V5Zufhf4dg.

On another occasion, when Gov. Mead was being interviewed, another calf was hurt so badly he had to be carted off. The governor said nothing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KclSewIABE

SHARK (SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness), an animal protection video watchdog, said calf roping is one of the most dangerous rodeo events, causing paralysis from spinal cord injuries, severed tracheas, broken backs, necks and legs. Calf roping is banned in Rhode Island and also the city of Baltimore, as well as the United Kingdom, Germany and The Netherlands.

"We are not surprised Gov. Mead was not bothered by how these poor animals were treated even though he saw it happen right in front of him. Anyone with a heart knows it's wrong to clothesline a baby animal, body slam it to the ground, tie its legs so it can’t move, and drag it by the neck. The governor, a former prosecutor, knows that if this were done to a puppy or kitten, it'd be a crime," said Steve Hindi, SHARK president.

SHARK said the calf injury was not the only animal cruelty at CFD 2015. SHARK has recorded numerous injuries – although CFD is hiding them from the public – including:

> 1st Injured Steer 2015 Cheyenne: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G08GMjWCPgY

> 2nd Injured Calf 2015 Cheyenne: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeglIJFkwRk

To fully inform the public about the animal cruelty at CFD, SHARK is running commercials on CNN, FoxNews and other cable networks urging viewers in Wyoming and Colorado not to attend the rodeo. http://sharkonline.org/index.php/shameoncheyenne/cheyenne-frontier-days-rodeo-articles/1586-shark-s-turth-about-rodeo-ads-running-now In the spots, horses are seen brutalized, and one is mortally injured.
