Deep Ecology and the Pope's Encyclical

Date:
Sunday, August 02, 2015
Time:
10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Event Type:
Meeting
Organizer/Author:
Paul Rockwell
Location Details:
Berkeley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall
1924 Cedar, Berkeley

"Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods is holy." So wrote Chief Seattle in 1859.

"There is a mystical meaning to be found in a leaf, in a mountain trail, in a dewdrop, in a poor person's face." So wrote Pope Francis in 2015.

Only when enough people awaken to a deep spiritual connection with nature will environmentalism become an effective global ethic. What are the implications of the Pope's historic letter to the world? Are American churches mosques, temples ready for deep ecology?

Food justice activist Paul Rockwell, columnist for the Hills Newspapers, writer for In Motion Magazine, will deliver a sermon on deep ecology at the Berkeley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall Sunday, August 2nd. Service begins at 10:30. People of all faiths and ideologies are welcome.
