1971: Film Night at the OMNI

Optik Allusions/ Oscar Grant Committee presents:

A film about direct action to expose government surveillance.

On March 8, 1971, the night of the “Fight of the Century” boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, eight activists, calling themselves the Citizens’ Commission to Investigate the FBI, broke into to the small FBI field office in Media, Pennsylvania. They took hundreds of files from the office and mailed anonymously to the newspapers and congressmen. In doing so, they uncovered the FBI’s vast and illegal regime of spying and intimidation of Americans.The most significant revelation was an illegal program overseen by lifelong FBI director J. Edgar Hoover known as COINTELPRO – the Counter Intelligence Program.
