350LA is working on a campaign to get The New Orleans city council to mandate that Entergy New Orleans (ENO), a regulated monopoly, give us 20% renewable energy by 2020. The city council has regulatory power over the utility.
Every 3 years ENO has to go through an Integrated Resource Planning process to show how they will meet New Orleans resident's energy needs.
The study must plan 20 years into the future, and ENO's projections assume gas prices will stay flat and low for 20 years. This is simply untrue and we feel that it is negligent on the part of the utility.
Residents or "rate payers" pay for the any decision that ENO makes, so if gas prices spike we foot the bill.
ENO is going to shut down two gas plants, Mishu 1 & 2, leaving a large gap in our energy production. ENO plans to replacing them with another gas plant. We could easily meet our energy need without building the new plant. This plant would most likely be built in New Orleans East, a poor area of the city that is 99% people of color. Communities of color overwhelmingly are on the front lines of environmental injustice.

This is a campaign for renewable energy, this is a campaign to hold corporations like Entergy accountable, this is a campaign to stop the building of toxic gas plants in a poor neighborhood of color and this is a campaign to create lasting good paying green jobs.
