The Appreciating Diversity Film Series present two films from the upcoming series "The Raising of America: Early Childhood and the Future of our Nation".

"Are We Crazy About Our Kids?" explores how investing in high-quality early care and preschool pays for itself in many ways and many times over. Now economists are studying the costs and benefits of high-quality and preschool and they're worried. Not because we're spending too much, but because we're spending too little where it matters most. Our system is paying for failure, rather than investing in success. The question: What will we do about it?

"Wounded Places" was filmed in Oakland and Philadelphia and tells the stories of children shaken by violence. Too many American children, especially children of color in neighborhoods of concentrated poverty, are exposed to adversity violence, neglect and other forms of trauma. They show symptoms similar to PTSD - except there is no "post". Of these children the film asks not "what's wrong with you?" but "What happened to you?" and how can traumatized children and neighborhoods heal?

The New Parkway is located at 474 24th street, in Oakland near Telegraph.
Food will be available for purchase. The documentaries will be shown free of charge and open to the public. 3:00 - 4:15 for both documentaries.
