UC Santa Cruz is currently under investigation by the US Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) for mishandling reports of sexual violence. OCR will be visiting campus Wednesday, May 27 and Thursday, May 28 to hear from students regarding how sexual violence reports are handled by the UCSC administration. Campus visit by U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights

To: UC Santa Cruz students
From: Chancellor George Blumenthal and Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor Alison Galloway
May 21, 2015

As you may know, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is reviewing the campus's handling of sexual violence and sexual harassment. The campus is one of several University of California campuses now under review by the OCR.

The OCR staff will visit UC Santa Cruz on May 26-28 to talk with students directly about their experiences on campus related to sexual violence/harassment prevention and response.

We encourage all students to take this opportunity to share your thoughts and experiences with OCR. This campus visit by OCR allows students an opportunity to directly communicate strengths and weaknesses of the university on this critical issue.

Students can participate and speak with OCR without revealing their names or other personally identifying information. The campus's confidential victim advocate as well as peer educators will also be available during OCR's visit to provide support before or after the OCR sessions for anyone who needs it.

A detailed schedule and more information can be found at this link.

UC Santa Cruz is committed to maintaining a safe campus environment for everyone and to preventing and responding appropriately to reports of all forms of sexual harassment and sexual violence.

For information about filing a report or complaint about sexual violence or sexual assault, please visit safe.ucsc.edu/filing-a-report, where you will find information about reporting options, including resources, phone numbers, and what to expect from each reporting option.

To contact the campus Title IX Officer, Tracey Tsugawa, please call 831-459-2462 or email ttsugawa [at] ucsc.edu.
