Defend Knowland Park!

A Non-Violent Direct Action Against The Oakland Zoo Expansion!
Friday - March 27th - 4PM
Snowdown Ave. and Malcolm Trail Entrance
Knowland Park - Oakland - CA

Knowland Park (Ohlone Territory called Huchiun) is a 500 acre wild space in the Oakland hills. It was deeded to the City by the State in the 1970′s under the condition that it would always remain a public park but now the Oakland Zoo is trying to expand onto 77 acres without legal permits, fencing it in, and cutting down 60+ trees, some of which are Old Growth/Heritage Oaks. The park is a home to threatened animals such as the Alameda Whipsnake, California red-legged frog, and the Great Horned Owl. It also is a migratory corridor for coyotes, mountain lions, and bobcats. While the zoo claims to conserve these corridors this project will do just the opposite and greatly disrupt their habitat.

Knowland Park is a diverse and fragile ecosystem that hosts a community of threatened animals, rare plants, and ancient fungi networks that we must protect from this project .The expansion is an addition tol the City's gentrifying/neo-colonial plans and will cause a boom in upper class tourism in Oakland, raising rents and eventually evicting masses of people.

Friends of Knowland Park (http://www.saveknowland.org/) waged a legal battle for decades, going through all legal means to defend the park but the City of Oakland and the Oakland Zoo are refusing to listen to the people. Recently the referendum to halt the project failed when we collected 8,000 of 21,000 signatures in only the one month given to us but we know that the community of Oakland opposes this project. Therefore we have no choice but to uphold our commitment to the land and the community and take direct action to oppose the expansion of the Oakland Zoo.
