New Orleans: City Park for Everyone coalition speaks out against golf course construction
Members of the City Park for Everyone coalition speak out about the golf course construction that just began in the park. (11:11 audio)
Listen now:
On a quiet day just before Mardi Gras, fences went up around a large part of City Park between Harrison and Filmore. This was the prelude to construction of a long-delayed $24 million golf course. (A small part of that construction cost will be covered by a FEMA settlement from Hurricane Katrina damage. A larger portion of funds will come from the state of Louisiana, currently under a serious budget crisis.)
Some folks were upset about being cut off from a beloved part of the park, so they started a new group just last week. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/WildGolfCourse/) They are the City Park for Everyone coalition, and they held a demonstration last Saturday just outside the fence on Harrison Avenue.
Last night the held a fundraiser at Bud Rip's bar and WTUL was there to speak to them about their perspective on the golf course project.
