The Fall from Heaven

(Kurdish: Ketina Ji Bihûştê, Turkish: Cennetten Kovulmak)

Set in Turkey around 2000, this feature film develops around two intertwined stories. Emine, who works as an electrical engineer at a construction site employing mostly Kurdish workers, finds herself torn between a secret love and socio-political pressures. Meanwhile, in a remote Kurdish village, Ayse, whose siblings join the Kurdish resistance, is drawn by the lure of the megacity of Istanbul.

The film illustrates the complex forces shaping life in modern Turkey, and provides essential context for understanding the country's role on the edge of epic conflict in the Middle East.

Directed by Ferit Karahan. Turkish/Kurdish with English subtitles. 2013. 82 minutes.

Sharat G. Lin will lead discussion.
