The East Bay Solidarity Network is launching a 4-month anti-policing effort and we're looking for folks to join up! Our first info-session will be on Wednesday, February 4th at 7pm at the Omni Commons, 4799 Shattuck Ave. in Oakland.
Hey everyone! The East Bay Solidarity Network is launching a project to challenge police violence and gentrification in Oakland and we're looking for people interested in joining! The project emerges out of folks in East Bay Sol seeking to answer the question of how to stand in solidarity with people of color and fight for our own liberation. #BlackLivesMatter is about more than police brutality, but rather about calling into question the structures of power that maintain neo-colonialism and white supremacy. Gentrification is a key piece of these structures, a piece that plays a huge role in Oakland.
Newly gentrifying neighborhoods are seeing increased policing, as well as new private security forces. So what does solidarity look like in this political climate? Well, here is our attempt to answer that question. We are calling our friends and community to help us outreach to primarily white and transplant communities to start conversations about police violence, and inform them of alternatives to calling the cops.
This project will be four months long, and we are asking about 4 hours a week. It will be half reading group/grassroots organizing. Haven't had a lot of organizing experience but looking for a place to start? This is it. If you have any interest or you know someone who would be perfect, let me know!! Our first meeting will be Feb. 4th, 7-9:30pm at the Omni Commons, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland.
