Google Lawyer Jack Halprin Runs From Tenants He's Evicting After They Block His Bus

by Anti-Eviction Mapping Project
On December 16th, at 6:30 in the morning as it was still dark outside, tenants from 812 Guerrero and activists from Eviction Free San Francisco blocked the Google bus that Jack Halprin was going to ride, protesting his eviction of them. When he saw his bus blocked, he ran from the scene back to his house. Protestors followed him there, and picketed outside.

There was also representation from the Justice For Alex Nieto Committee, making connections between gentrification and increased police brutality.

San Francisco-This Tuesday, Dec 16th, the tenants of 812 Guerrero, Eviction Free San Francisco and coalition of tenant's rights activists, blocked the Google Bus that Jack Halprin takes to get to work in the morning, in order to demand that the landlord and Google employee drop the Ellis Act eviction of 812 Guerrero. Jack Halprin, Head of e-Discovery for Google Inc., moved into the 7-unit Mission apartment and preceded to evict the tenants, using both a fraudulent owner move-in eviction, followed by an Ellis Act eviction for the remaining tenants. Of the remaining tenants, two are teachers in San Francisco, one is a therapist, one is a taxi driver, one is a 3-year-old, and one is a musician- they all relied on their rent-controlled apartment to afford to live and work in San Francisco. If the Ellis Act Eviction is not dropped, the tenants are unsure of their future in the San Francisco.

The Google Bus block and protest follows nearly a year of the 812 Guerrero tenants fighting their Ellis Act Eviction from landlord Jack Halprin. After many attempts to reach out to Jack and Google, the tenants decided to start a petition, in order to ask Google, Jack's employer, to make an official commitment to their community. The link to the petition is here:
Petition. Please sign it and pass it on! We will deliver it to Google soon!

This action was done in solidarity with the current movement surrounding police violence and the criminalization of people of color. Gentrification and displacement are part of a system that disproportionally targets people of color and perpetuates violence. Eviction Free San Francisco stands with communities of color fighting to remain in their homes and their neighborhoods. Racism and gentrification go hand in hand. As tech hires roughly 60% white people. Of high-tech positions within tech, only 3% are occupied by Latina/os, and only 1% are occupied by black people.
