by Monterey County Police News
Salinas Police have reported they killed a man on Friday night. According to an SPD press release, Jaime Garcia, age 35, died after an officer with the SPD shot him with a Taser gun. Garcia is the fifth man killed by Salinas Police in 2014.

Police say they were responding to a "domestic disturbance" at a residence on N. Madeira at about 10pm on October 31. When police arrived at the home, they say Garcia became "combative."

The press release from the Salinas Department states:

"During a struggle with Garcia one officer used his Taser on Garcia who continued to resist and not comply. During the struggle with Officers it became readily apparent that Garcia was going into medical distress. Paramedics, who were staged nearby, were immediately summoned to the scene where Garcia was quickly transported to a local hospital with CPR in progress. Efforts by paramedics to revive Garcia were not successful and he was pronounced deceased at the hospital. A scheduled autopsy should determine exact cause of death."

According to the press release the five responding officers who were involved were put on administrative leave.

Before Friday night, officers with the Salinas Police Department killed four other people in 2014: Angel Ruiz was killed on March 20 by Sergeant Mark Lazzarini, Officer Daniel DeBorde, and Officer William Yetter; Osman Hernandez was killed on May 9 by Sergeant George Lauricella and Officer Derek Gibson; Carlos Mejia-Gomez was killed on May 20 by Sergeant Danny Warner and Officer Josh Lynd; and Frank Alvarado was killed on July 10 by Sergeant Brian Johnson and Officer Scott Sutton.

"The department is considering this death an officer-attended death, rather than an officer-involved death."

"The autopsy for the Salinas man who died following an altercation with police Halloween night that resulted in him being shot with a stun gun, showed there were no physical signs of trauma to his body, Salinas police Cmdr. Vincent Maiorama said Tuesday."

"A toxicology screen, "which could take weeks or month," Maiorama said, could reveal what killed Jaime Garcia, 35. Maiorama said the cause of death will likely be drug overdose."
