Santa Cruz Police attempt to discredit Leonie Sherman by labeling her an anarchist

Santa Cruz Police Department Deputy Chief Steve Clark labeled Santa Cruz City Council candidate Leonie Sherman an "anarchist" on the evening news due to the fact that she hung a banner at the WTO protest in Seattle 15 years ago.

Dear Constituent,

In a shocking campaign development, Deputy Chief Steve Clark labeled Santa Cruz City Council candidate Leonie Sherman an "anarchist" on the evening news due to the fact that she hung a banner at the WTO protest 15 years ago. The courage and conviction that she displayed as part of this non-violent protest are just some of the reasons why Sherman will be an excellent City Councilmember. For those of you that don't remember the WTO protest, Sherman's action was part of a successful movement on the part of tens of thousands of activists in the US and abroad to end back room deals that encouraged the abuse of workers in the 3rd world. Since that time, Leonie turned her care and conviction to her hometown here in Santa Cruz by co-creating a community self defense program with the City's Police Department and the City's Commission for the Prevention of Violence Against Women. She was extremely surprised to hear a member of the police department attack her on television without any attempt to contact her.

Deputy Chief Clark is hoping that his last minute attack will derail her campaign. I'm asking all of you to prove him wrong. Please consider supporting the Sherman campaign by sending in a donation or an additional donation, dropping off literature, knocking on doors or talking to people on the phone. Go to leoniesherman.com to make a donation or contact her campaign manager to volunteer.

The election is less than 2 weeks away and people are voting already.

For more information go to the City's Website: cityofsantacruz.com.

You are the best person to know how to vote on or before November 4th.

Thank you for your care and for your attention to democracy,

Micah Posner
Santa Cruz City Council

If there were laws against such things, and they were enforced; who would investigate, prosecute, and incarcerate the SCPD and 'mainstream media'? District Attorney? Sheriffs? California Board Of Elections? State Attorney General? DoJ? FBI?

As the difference between LEO actions in Ferguson (after the murder of Mike Brown) and during the PumpkinFest rioting has shown; rule of law is buggy, when it comes to those that are more above the law than others, or more below the law than others.

BTW, has the SCPD ever talked to the media about the criminal past of TBSC members?
This is the kind of tactic we expect from police states, not Santa Cruz.

This officer should be sanctioned for using the power of his job to attempt to warp local political discussion.

Honestly, I would be more shocked if I heard that some Santa Cruz candidates did not oppose the WTO.

This is what Greenpeace says about the WTO:
"The WTO is a tool of the rich and powerful. By placing trade above all other goals, it threatens our health and the environment. Its more powerful members use arm-twisting tactics to push developing countries into making bad deals. And it's being used by corporate interests and the US to force-feed the world genetically engineered food." http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/campaigns/trade-and-the-environment/why-is-the-wto-a-problem/

Go Leonie! Thanks for standing up for what's right.
Learning about Leonie Sherman's courageous political activism persuaded me to step off the fence and give her my support — I'm voting for her. This slander campaign, akin to red baiting during the McCarthy era, shocked me. I fear some suggestible people will lend credence to a deputy police chief making blatantly false claims for his personal political agenda — he's supposed to be a law enforcement officer not a partisan agent. The KSBW segment was not journalism, it was an attempted political hit job employing character assassination.

Leonie Sherman stands with temerity above the fray, trying to focus on the issues facing our community, not political tantrums by a rogue police officer.

In any case, she has shown and continues to show us why we should elect her to the City Council. To promote better understanding of why Leonie Sherman deserves this, I created the following Facebook group. I encourage everyone to read the positive discussions there about why we support Leonie Sherman for City Council.

"SANTA CRUZ >> Police Chief Kevin Vogel said Thursday the department's public information officer will no longer speak on behalf of a police managers union to avoid confusion between the roles."

"He was clearly speaking on behalf of the Police Management Association, although we do understand, how in his official capacity in the Police Department as the interim press officer, the community could have been confused about his role," Vogel told the Sentinel. "As we move forward — Steve and I discussed this — someone else will speak on behalf of the PMA.""
