Stop Illegal Tourist Conversions!

Date:
Tuesday, July 29, 2014
Time:
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Event Type:
Protest
Organizer/Author:
San Francisco Tenants Union
Location Details:
1937 Mason Street

Thousands of San Francisco’s rent controlled apartments have been illegally converted to short term rentals via web site like Airbnb. Worse, speculators and landlords have been Ellis evicting tenants in order to convert the entire apartment building into illegal tourist rentals.

Despite the fact that these conversions violate the city’s Apartment Conversion Law and the Planning Code (and are illegal twice!) and are occurring during the worst housing crisis ever, San Francisco officials have done virtually nothing to stop this wave of evictions and conversions.

It’s time for all of us to start taking action. The SF Tenants Union has begun filing complaints against dozens of these conversions and will be following up with lawsuits. But we need to do more!

Join us next Tuesday, July 29 at 12 Noon at 1937 Mason St. when we will begin a citizens campaign against these conversions by physically identifying where conversions have happened and by warning tourist occupants that they are living in illegal hotel rooms. We’ll meet at 1937 Mason, where seniors were evicted via the Ellis Act so it could be turned into a hotel. And then we’ll spread out “tag” other illegal conversions!
