San Mateo Sheriff Kills Special Needs Woman
A San Mateo County Sheriff’s Deputy killed an 18 year old woman on June 3 at her home near Half Moon Bay. Sheriffs say they were called to her home after they received a report that she was violent and had a weapon. According to a report by NBC Bay Area, the woman's brother, Lorenzo Serrano, said that his special needs sister, "may have been off her medication and likely had a knife." He also said, "We want answers....Why didn't they use a Taser? We just want to know what really happened."
"We want justice," Lorenzo Serrano said in the NBC interview.
The Sheriff who killed the woman was identified as Deputy Menh Trieu.
The press release issued by the San Mateo Sheriffs states:
"Unincorporated North San Mateo Coast, CA: On, Tuesday, June 03, 2014, at approximately 9:23pm, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Moonridge Housing Complex, located at Miramontes Point Road, east of Highway 1, on report of a violent female subject who was thought to be armed. Upon arrival there was a confrontation with the subject and fearing for his life, the deputy discharged his weapon. Fire and Medics were called to the scene as well as the Coroner’s Office who subsequently declared the individual, an 18 year old female as being deceased. San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office Inspectors and the San Mateo County Crime Lab responded to the scene as well as San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Detectives. No members of law enforcement were injured as a result of this incident and the investigation is being handled jointly between the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office."
