Founded in 1998, Reporte Ilegal has been spreading music to the masses for over a decade. Comprised of two MC's, RE2 and Spia104 and a producer Z Darek they created a group that broke away from the commericalized American-influenced hip hop coming from Mexico.
After returning to Mexico City from a year in the United States, RE2, who also goes by Wilson, met up with Z Darek who had been producing electro music since the early nineties. In turn Z Darek Introduced Wilson to Spia 104, who had been working his way through the freestyle and graffiti circuit for over two years. Wilson was coming from a punk background, being the lead singer of activist political hardcore band Dolor y Odio for the previous eight years. The three together created a group that would speak out about injustices occurring in their city and cities around the world as well as stretch the boundaries of beats and sounds in rap production.
The group played their first show in February of 1998, an open mic event, under the name Informe Ilegal. When the announcer mispronounced them as Reporte Ilegal the name stuck and all three rolled with it. Later on that year the group would preform at "Vive Latino", a yearly music festival in Mexico City that attracts over 80,000 people. They were the first hip-hop group to ever preform at the event, which mostly books rock, indie and alternative bands.
In 1999 students at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico protested a rate increase and the privatization of their public
school. That protest quickly turned into a strike of the entire campus with professors and blue-collar workers from the school joining
with students. Wilson was one of the over 300,000 students attending the university at that time.
Participating in first the protest and then in the strike, Wilson brought Reporte Ilegal to the school and to neighborhoods around the city to spread the word of the strife of the students, teachers and workers at the largest university in Latin America.
By blending Cumbia, Salsa and other Latin rhythms with Electro, Hip-Hop and political consciousness, Reporte Ilegal was able to reach a broad group of fans. Some of those fans even went on to create other conscious hip-hop groups through out Mexico and Latin America.
Wilson currently resides in San Francisco with his wife where they run a tattoo shop in the Mission District, Tribus Vivas Dermafilia. He performs on a regular basis at gatherings and shows with DJ Freddy Future (Slayers Club, Daly City Records), DJ Juan Data (Strong Hold), bassist Cyrus (The Illness) and John Paul, a jazz percussionist from New York and the Bay Area.
Together they collaborate with musicians all over the States, Latin America and Europe. Both Z Darek and Spia 104 reside in Mexico City. Z Darek has taken a break from producing to focus on his passion for photography (Israel Tapia Photography). Spia 104 has played many shows around Mexico with DJ Shawer and has dropped two demos with Reporte Ilegal and a solo album, El camino Del Vigia in 2008. Spia 104 and Wilson recently dropped a vinyl, Archivos De Pais, on the groups own label, Reporte Ilegal Records. Since the founding of the label they have collaborated and produced beats for Sekreto (g-lokos), Slay (dignatarios), Dash (12 pulgadas), Los Rastrillos, Hipnozys records, T-killa, Nedman, Magisterio, El Maese KDS (spain), Jehuniko, Trafikante de almas, Gundam McFlym, , DJ Jonta, Rawgitt Sunn of Wu-Latino, Liryko & Mextape. The two have been branching out from the US and Mexico to others across the globe for collaboration on beats and rhymes and have been working to drop a Reporte Ilegal album in the US in 2011. Wilson has been playing shows in and around California, preforming with acts like DJ Muggs, GZA, The Wailers, Sekreto, Fuga, Phish Bone, Toy Selectah, Aztlan Underground and Jehuniko. He has also had his song Honestidad featured in the independent film Kilo, shot in the Mission District. He runs an underground radio station in East Oakland and hosts "Radio Barrio" radio show with La Onda Bajita broadcasted out of KPFA 94.1FM and Free Radio Berkeley.
