MATTAWAN/KALAMAZOO, MI – National Research Watchdog Group, SAEN (Stop Animal Exploitation NOW) has filed an Official Complaint for the deaths of 136 animals, as disclosed in controversial MPI Research correspondence.
According to the MPI Research documents (obtained via FOIA): October 2013, MPI Research euthanized 134 rabbits, after a veterinary consultant damaged the rabbits' eyes. On September 4 2012, MPI Research, diagnosed eye damage based on improper insertion of a needle during eye testing.
On September 4, 2012, MPI Research reported an incident which had occurred on August 6, 2012, a spiral facture of the tibia of 12 week old beagle puppy.
Additionally, MPI Research euthanized a rabbit following an incident in which the animal's pelvis was fractured, also in September of 2012.
SAEN has filed an Official Complaint with the USDA alleging improper animal handling and use of unqualified personnel by MPI Research.
Following complaints filed by National Research Watchdog group SAEN (Stop Animal Exploitation NOW) the USDA issued a $6,911 fine against MPI in February of 2013.
“The USDA must impose a more severe fine since MPI Research negligence has now killed another 136 animals,” said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN. “MPI Research is a repeat offender exhibiting multiple incidents of fatal negligence, they deserve the maximum penalty.”
All MPI correspondence is available upon request from SAEN.
