The Bay Area Socialist Party (SPUSA) Officially Forms A New Local

by Thomas Wells (thoughtboy925 [at] yahoo.com)
Socialists from South San Francisco Bay joined with others from the North Bay to officially form a new local of the Socialist Party USA. The new local will fight for economic, social and environmental justice in the Bay Area. The Bay Area Socialists will collaborate and coalesce with others fighting in common cause. Strategy sessions will be scheduled both in the South and North Bay in March. The new local elected officers and outlined ideas for creating a new democratic socialist presence.

On February 22nd, socialists from the South Bay met with others from the North bay to hold the first official business meeting of the Bay Area Socialists (SPUSA). At the meeting the members unanimously agreed to form a local of the Bay Area Socialists for the Socialist Party USA. They also elected officers and unanimously agreed to bylaws. Held in Milpitas, the meeting was strongly represented by South Bay members of the Party. There was extensive discussion about the kinds of issues and strategies the local might initiate in the coming months in order to build a democratic socialist base for the Socialist Party and to create a strong socialist presence in the Bay. General consensus was reached that the local would fight for economic and social justice for working people through local organizing. The organizing may take the form of working in collaboration and coalition with others to fight for common cause, working for local referenda or it might be local electoral work. The Party local left open many possibilities and had high hopes of getting further input as more people participate.

It was also agreed that organizing within the local would occur both in the South and the North parts of the Bay Area and that in March, meetings would soon be scheduled in both regions.

THE SOCIALIST PARTY strives to establish a radical democracy that places people's lives under their own control - a non-racist, classless, feminist socialist society... where working people own and control the means of production and distribution through democratically-controlled public agencies, cooperatives, or other collective groups.; where full employment is realized for everyone who wants to work; where workers have the right to form unions freely, and to strike and engage in other forms of job actions; and where the production of society is used for the benefit of all humanity, not for the private profit of a few. We believe socialism and democracy are one and indivisible...
