save-post-office-banner2.jpgThe Postal Service has put the Berkeley Post Office up for sale!!

The Postal Service has started to outsource Post Office services to Staples, replacing union jobs with low-paying, low benefit work.

Five weeks ago the Planning Commission passed on to the Berkeley City a proposed Zoning Ordinance that would make the Post Office property less desirable to potential purchasers of the capitalist variety. We are still waiting for action on this from the City Council.

The Postal Service has announced that they are contracting with Staples to provide Post Office window services inside Staples stores, using Staples employees instead of Post Office employees. There is already a pseudo Post Office operating inside the Berkeley Staples store (Shattuck & Durant)

Come and help plan our next actions in defense of our Post Office and against privatization and non living-wage jobs. We want to send a message to CBRE, the Post Office, Staples and Berkeley politicians that the sale will not be tolerated!

We will likely be planning an action at the Berkeley Staples for Saturday, Dec 21st. Come help up!

Check out the video of Peter Byrne's talk at our latest Save the Post Office Rally!

The propensity of the cheap and flashy buildings that are money makers is the source of the discordant practices of the dismantling of the most precious and most correct architechture the world knows. Obviously this particular down town Berkley Post Office is of high architectual Quality and should be upkept for the comming centuries and new generations as a prize showpiece.

Make sure not to allow the building to be sold for demolition or any kind of degrading purposes. Such a building as this has worth and beauty why not keep it functioning as a local public post-office, and/or public bank, co-operative or credit Union?

End pollution wars of destruction, not endless wars for more and more pollution destruction. Ye yet have a world to win!!

In England during the ninetienth century so many buildings of high quality were being destroyed around London etc., to make way for cheap money makers that William Morris formed a committee to preserve best architecture, that was armed to put a stop to it if necessary.

Culture is precious to all societies, and if it is not protected by laws, economics, cultural organization, and religio wise decisions, then opportunists will end up destroying the very best to establish the cheapened worst sort unbelievable disreputable unsafe building possible to still stand. Very true to unite and struggle to protect this obvious beautiful building.
