KoNo Office Gets Windows Smashed

by Anonymous
In the early hours of November 27, 2013, "Smash Kono" was spraypainted on the windows of the Kono Office at Telegraph and 27th. The other windows were then smashed with a hammer and the door was broken.
This office bears partial responsibility for the ongoing gentrification of West Oakland along Telegraph Ave. They openly facilitate "development" in a historically working class community, causing the vile symptoms if rent raises, high-rise condos, coffee shops and all the useless yuppies that come with. The Kono office is helping to create a homogeneous shopping environment from Jack London to Emeryville. This effort is dynamic. It is rapidly changing the face of West Oakland.

Despite all this, there has been a sickening lack of violent action against the forces of gentrification. There is hope this action will inspire others to act as well. The targets are obvious and numerous. It takes only a small number of autonomous groups of dedicated people to create a repeating pattern of property destruction and a fear among developers that repair costs will be undesirable to profits. They will leave because the only language they speak is money.

Let the attacks continue until the gentrifiers leave Kono and similar developments behind. Let there be a rapid frequency of sustained attack in the coming weeks. Let the anger flow until our enemies drown in the barrage of destruction. The time is now, and it starts with you.

Is whoever is doing this simultaneously making an effort to communicate about it to hard-pressed working people in Oakland? If not, then you can break all the windows you want and it won't do a damn bit of good.

Vandalism that isn't an element of a much larger effort to communicate using clear language is just vandalism -- nobody is going to be all that impressed. Nobody remembers the context-and-language-free spasm of vandalism out of SF's Dolores Park a year and a half ago. Live and learn from that, tovarich!

"...Let the attacks continue until the gentrifiers leave Kono and similar developments behind."

"Let the attacks continue..." This is a strangely passive and hopefully not telling choice of phrasing. Maybe you should use this opportunity to test-drive your larger and more substantive arguments, which you are hopefully preparing to use among mainstream working people in North Oakland who are threatened by displacement.
