11/5/13 SF Voters Defeat Props B&C, Luxury Condos

by Housing is a Right
In a low voter turnout off year election on 11/5/13, San Francisco voters managed to defeat luxury condominiums, Props B & C, that were proudly promoted by big money and Democratic mayor Ed Lee, Democratic Lt Gov Gavin Newsom and Democratic supervisors Scott Wiener, Mark Farrell and Katy Tang, voting 62% No on B and 66% No on C, with a total of 95,612 votes cast in this election as of 10:19 pm on 11/5/13. In a high voter turnout election, 350,000 votes are cast in a city of 856,000 people, 13% of whom are children, thus 744,000 of whom are adults.

As the No on B&C campaign website states, the Yes on B&C campaign spent $1.8 million as of Oct 24, 2013, with much more to be reported.

This sends a clear message that we need AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR THE WORKINGCLASS, the 80% of the US population that sells our labor for less than $80,000 a year and WHO ARE THE LABOR FORCE. WE ALSO NEED REPEAL OF THE ELLIS ACT AND THE COSTA HAWKINS ACT by the SUPERMAJORITY Democrats in the state legislature and the Democratic governor, to stop evictions and high rents caused by no vacancy control. The repeal of these 2 disastrous laws MUST BE A TOP PRIORITY. To learn more about these anti-tenant laws, see the website of the San Francisco Tenants Union: http://www.sftu.org/

The Green Party was an active opponent of Props B&C and it, along with Peace & Freedom Party support the repeal of the Ellis Act and the Costa Hawkins Act NOW. We face a major housing crisis in San Francisco as there are no rents now that can be paid by any worker. Those of us still living in San Francisco are living in rent controlled units for a long time. Once these are vacated, the landlord can raise the rents to any amount. We have at least 10,000 homeless in San Francisco, and the 100% Democratic Party Board of Supervisors just passed an attack on the homeless on 11/5/13 with a 6 to 5 vote to close the parks at night, with the same reactionaries supporting the closure as supported the luxury condos, Wiener, Farrell and Tang, as well as Chiu, Cohen and Yee.

If you have had enough of the refusal of the Democratic Party supermajority in the state legislature to repeal the Ellis Act and the Costa Hawkins Act now, and enough of reactionary Democratic Party mayors and their fellow Democratic Party fascists promoting luxury condominiums, change your voter registration now to Peace & Freedom Party or the Green Party. They need you now to stay on the ballot. To register online, go to:
