Anna Politkovskaya, still seeking justice after 7 years
It has been almost 7 years since the death of journalist Anna Politkovskaya. The upcoming murder trial will likely be boycotted by her children, who have had no input in the process of jury selection which has been largely controlled by the defendants. In 2008, Nina Ognianova of the Committee to protect Journalists remembered that Anna "... had an urgency about her--that rare focus that comes only with absolute clarity about one's mission in life. Politkovskaya's passion was almost tangible--neither her low voice nor her poised delivery could camouflage it.http://cpj.org/blog/2008/10/i-met-anna-politkovskaya-in.php
"We did not select the jury, and we were deprived of the right to file the required motions we were simply crossed out of the list of the interested parties," Ilya Politkovsky and Vera Politkovskaya have emphasized in their statement released on July 23.http://eng.kavkaz-uzel.ru/articles/25271/
Excerpts from their statement were made available by interfax.co,uk:
“We waited almost seven years for the murderers to be brought to justice, but the state does not care enough to wait for several days. A patently illegitimate trial will begin at the Moscow City Court at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow,
We, the affected party, refuse to participate in such a trial,
We urge the jury to do the same: ‘Dear all! An attempt is being made to draw you into a farce of a trial, one in which you will be unable to fulfill your civic duty. We are urging you to decline to serve as jurors,'
We refuse to attend court sessions, we refuse to give any testimony and to recognize anything that would be done by Judge Melekhin while trying this criminal case as legitimate,”
