Palo Alto Protests Pipeline at Obama Fundraiser
About 200 activists shouted: "Hey, Obama: We don't want to Pipeline Drama!" and sang "We will stand and fight" when the President Obama's motorcade wound its way through Palo Alto's tree lined streets yesterday. The president was attending a fundraiser at the home of hi tech mogul Mike McCue.
President Obama visited Palo Alto for a fundraiser yesterday, and hundreds of activists showed up to urge him to reject the Keystone pipeline.
Protesters said it is time for President Obama to hear their call and reject Keystone.
The proposed Keystone XL pipeline would carry up to 35 million gallons of oil strip-mined from Canada’s “tar sands” every day, cross the heart of the Midwest and deliver oil to the Gulf of Mexico, where much of it would be exported to other countries. Along the way the pipeline would cut through rivers, streams and prime wildlife habitat.
In addition, strip mining of oil from Alberta’s tar sands is destroying tens of thousands of acres of boreal forest and polluting hundreds of millions of gallons of water from the Athabasca River— in the process creating toxic ponds so large they can be seen from space.
Activists said it is “game over” for our ability to avoid a climate catastrophe if the Pipeline is not stopped.
