Chilao School Open House - April 27 and 28, 2013 Chilao School, Angeles National Forest Free Event Open to and Welcoming the greater southern California community Angeles National Forest, Chilao Campground, Mile 49.69 Angeles Crest Highway, La Canada Flintridge, CA 91011 Chilao School is a historic 2000 square foot one room school house, possibly the last functioning one room school in California, and it is being opened for public use as an outdoor education center, retreat space and group program venue. The purpose of the Open House is to introduce this unique and beautiful location to the philanthropic and educational community at large as a venue that can be incorporated into existing programs, or be the nucleus for new outdoor opportunities to groups who currently do not have an accessible, affordable outdoor space. The school is owned by Redbird, a Native American and environmental non profit association, and operated by special permit from the United States Department of Agriculture, U.S. Forest Service as an educational facility. There will be refreshments available throughout the weekend, a Native American tipi raising workshop on Saturday at noon, nature walks lead by local naturalists throughout the weekend, music by southern California flutists and possibly a powwow drum. Groups who serve inner city, challenged and disadvantaged youth and adults, as well as those facing life threatening illnesses, are encouraged to come check out Chilao School. Plan an outing with your group to correspond with our open house weekend. Educators and outdoor recreation administrators, practitioners of the healing arts, naturalists, artists and non profit administrators are all welcome. This is a free event; bring guests, clients and friends. Foundation administrators are also welcome and encouraged to view the property. Redbird is actively seeking support for repairs and upgrades needed to make the school more accessible and user-friendly. Chilao School is located within Chilao Campground. Reservations for Meadow Group Camp, 1/4 mile away, can be made by contacting the USFS at 877-444-6777. If you would like to volunteer as a cultural presenter, musician, artist, chef, yoga instructor, massage therapist, financial sponsor or something else, please contact Corina Roberts at redbirds_vision@hotmail.com or by phone at 805 217-0364.
