School board opposes nuclear reactor in San Diego

“If the nuclear power plant is restarted without going through a thorough safety vetting process, then it could potentially have an impact on the safety of our kids in San Diego Unified and surrounding communities.”

San Diego School District calls for NRC to conduct adjudicatory license amendment hearing process at San Onofre

by Lucas W. Hixson

(01-22-13) The nuclear industry pleaded last night with The San Diego Unified School District to delay their vote offering school board members a visit the nuclear power plant instead in order to "understand the rigorous regulatory process by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as well as the current situation at SONGS, especially as it relates to greater liability and clean air."

The school board ignored that plea.

Instead The Board of Education of the San Diego Unified School District passed a resolution which calls for the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission to conduct an adjudicatory license amendment hearing process on the proposed restart to San Onofre’s defective Unit 2 nuclear reactor.

The school district is concerned as they are potentially directly responsible for the children, for evacuations, sheltering in place, and for necessary supplies and accommodations in the event of a nuclear accident. Kevin Beiser said “If the nuclear power plant is restarted without going through a thorough safety vetting process, then it could potentially have an impact on the safety of our kids in San Diego Unified and surrounding communities.”

The San Diego Unified School District is the latest of eight local councils in Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego County who have passed resolutions or sent letters to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and state public utilities commission.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public meeting at the Capo Beach Church in San Juan Capistrano Feb. 12 on the restart plans. Commission officials said attendees would have the opportunity to submit comments and question staff and SCE executives.
