It is axiomatic that Marxists are not pacifists, so how does Marxism historically approach the war-peace question? This presentation will look at the issue chiefly through the analyses of three Marxist theorists on the topic: Friedrich Engels, Jean Jaures (French) and Tom Wintringham (English). It covers the period from the late 1800s through mid-World War II. All three analysts, plus others, tied together the army, war and defense (security) question in a way designed to prevent war and maintain international peace while overcoming capitalism. Much of their innovative--and interconnected--thought is unfamiliar to the U.S. left, though their mark is imprinted on International Marxism. A future talk will conclude this topic.
