oin HAVOQ's Prison Abolition & Prisoner Solidarity Workgroup for our November monthly penpal night. We have letters from queer & trans prisoners from around California who are looking for everything from personal to political to romantic exchanges. Making a real life connection based in friendship, support and solidarity with someone behind bars is one of the most important ways to fight the prison and criminalization systems, which is *designed* to isolate folks from their families and communities.
The run-down: 6-6:15, arrive, settle-in 6:15-6:45, facilitated discussion about current topics/issues affecting queers within the criminalization system/prison industry (Nov - Yoga in Prisons project - presented by Misia!) 6:45-8, review penpal guidelines, find/write to your personal penpal &/or make birthday cards for political prisoners &/or decorate holiday cards for your penpal or folks on the Black & Pink list There will also be space to share from powerful, touching or difficult letters you have already received. If you can, please bring some stamp money, a snack or a friend! Please invite friends, family, and other organizations that you work with. We have so many letters that we can even arrange to pass some along if you want to host your own letter writing night or can't attend on Wednesdays. *** We'll check our PO Box a few days before the event, so stay tuned to this page or join our prisonabqueers googlegroup by emailing flyingoverwalls [at] gmail [dot] com in order to be notified if we have received letters addressed to you and to hear about other work we're doing! Modern Times has zines, books and resources available if you just want to come and learn something and they can mail books to prisons if you get inspired. **EVERY 4th WEDNESDAY** (11/28, 12/26, 1/23...save the dates and let us know if you want to help facilitate the opening discussion for one of these dates!)
