Anti-Imperialist, Anti-Capitalist Hoodie & Hijab March in Oakland, 10/7/12: photos

by Dave Id
Directly after the Decolonize the New World 2012 Afghans for Peace rally in Oscar Grant plaza on the 11th anniversary of the war in Afghanistan and Indigenous People's Day (Columbus Day), up to 200 demonstrators marched through downtown Oakland for just under an hour. In the course of the march, while a sound system boomed and anti-war chants rang out, windows were broken, ATMs were smashed, and paint went up. Targets included numerous banks, a credit union, AC Transit, AT&T, the Oakland Tribune, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Sears, the Uptown Apartments, Rudy's Can't Fail, Oakland city hall, Oakland police department Internal Affairs, and more. The tires of one to two dozen relatively high-end vehicles were popped. The march returned to the plaza where it began and demonstrators dispersed of their own accord without confrontations with police or arrests.

The march generated heated discussion and debate amongst radical and liberal activists in the week that followed. Many objected to the property destruction all together. Others objected to the choice of some of the targets, such as the credit union, crowded bars along the southern end of Telegraph Avenue, and people's personal cars. One of the main themes of those objecting was that the actions were counter-productive to recruitment for a wider movement against militarism and capitalist oppression. Some justified the targets chosen, at least most of them, as fair game in the fight against violent oppression at home and abroad.

After having been hit with occupations and broken windows repeatedly over the past year, Obama's Oakland headquarters has moved to a new non-storefront location nearby.

I am not a liberal. i support property destruction and other direct action on corporate, police, and other government targets. I don't give a shit about city hall, AT&T, or Union Bank or most of these targets.. But why AC Transit's customer service office, and why a credit union? Please answer specifically, and of course anonymously. Or, were they not done by the same people as the others, but by cops or other provocateurs? Also i hope the people who left those hammers lying around were wearing gloves.

I was thinking the same thing about the hammers that were left behind. I assume people who used them wore gloves.

Why Sears?

Why Rudy's?

by deanosor (deanosor @mailup.net)
Sears is one the largest brick and mortar department stores in the world. Sears and K-Mart (owned by the same company) is 2nd (to Walmart). And plus those sexist adds are a terrible aesthetic for the neighborhood.

My suppositions as to why Rudy's:

*Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe was "marched on" during the May Day protests because they didn't let people off from work.
*They a flagship of Uptown gentrification.
*Phil Tagami (absolute scum) seems to hang out there a lot.

If you have nothing to replace what you destroy then use your energy to build something to replace what you want to destroy FIRST. Destruction for destructions sake is nothing but irresponsible hoolignism and nothing more. The majority of the population of the world is pissed off so get in line until you can put forward a program and leadership capable of transforming society.
