Diabetes Statistics for the occurrence of diabetes in the United States are startling.
Did you know that: Type 2 diabetes is the most common form and that it is the seventh leading cause of death. It is a major cause of heart disease and stroke. Diabetes is also the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic lower-limb amputations and new cases of blindness in the U.S.
Did you know that: The National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse (a division of the National Institutes of Health) reports that diabetes affects 25.8 million people of all age?. That's 8.3 percent of the population. Some 18.8 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes and an estimated seven million are undiagnosed.
Also, the costs associated with diabetes are estimated to be as much as $174 billion, with $116 billion being direct costs from medication, according to 2005-2007 ADA figures.” (WEB MD, September 13, 2012)
