SF City Librarian Says SF Bernal Heights Library Victor Jara Mural To Be Destroyed On Thursday October 4, 2012 Dear Brothers and Sisters,: S.F. Public Library plans to paint out the mural on Bernal Heights Branch Library THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2012. Pot and Pans To Stop The Demolition The announcement was made by City Librarian Luis Herrera at a meeting held at the Bernal Library on 10/3 during a meeting to discuss future library hours. The meeting was at the Bernal Heights Branch Library from 6pm - 8pm. Please fax him at 415-557-4240 and email him at lherrera(at)sfpl.gov to put a hold on the destruction of this mural and restart a transparent process on the mural and refurbishing the mural instead of destroying this historic community people's mural. Also contact SF Supervisor David Campos who did not attend this meeting. He can be reached at 415-554-5144 and his email is david.campos(at)sfgov.org. Campos handpicked a "community" committee that was primarily made up of people who wanted a new mural or wanted to have no mural on the building. Community activists will be meeting in front of the Library on Thursday October 4, 2012 at 10:00 AM with pots and pans to stop the Demolition. Please join us with your voices and pots and pans. Stop Destruction Of Victor Jara Mural At
SF Bernal Heights Library-Rally-Music Speakout
Musicians, artists and community activists rallied on 9/16/2012 to protest
the destruction of the Victor Jara mural at the San Francisco Bernal
Heights library. Chilean musician Victor Jara was murdered in
September 16, 1973 in a military coup supported by the United
States. The coup supported by the United States took place on
September 11, 1973. The corporate controlled San Francisco Library
Commission and the Friends of the Library in San Francisco have
pushed to censor and remove political community murals at San
Francisco libraries. Artist Holly Near and other artists have publicly
called on Mayor Ed Lee not to go ahead with the destruction of the
mural. At the same time the community was not informed of the
plan to destroy the mural.
