Chilao School Open House
August 18, 2012
10 AM to 4PM
Chilao Campground, Angeles National Forest

The Chilao School is just over 2,000 square feet of open space with good natural light, located in the heart of the Angeles National Forest, close to Newcomb’s Ranch Restaurant, within a quarter mile of Meadows Group Camp, and surrounded by hiking trails and scenic vistas.

The school was built in 1963 by La Canada Unified School District and briefly served the residents of the Angeles National Forest as an elementary school. Closed to the public since the late 1980s, the school now belongs to the non profit group Redbird, who is making the space available to rent for uses consistent with our permit to operate in a national forest. Our permit is categorized as educational which includes arts and culture.

The school is being left largely intact and retains the charm of its bygone days. Redbird’s goal is to make this space available to arts, culture, self improvement, forest management, fire ecology and educational groups in the greater Los Angeles area and beyond.

The property renovation is a work in progress, with all of the labor and materials to date being donated.

Food and refreshments will be served throughout the day. Thre is no cost; donations are welcomed. Musicians who would like to share their music are very welcome; Chilao Flats is situated in a bowl that amplifies and reverberates sound.
