Along the Way

Along the Way will feature a cohort of new dance works, both for film and stage. The evening includes a dryly humorous and satirical take on illusions and lies in relationships, a film following a cast of oddball characters, and other highly theatrical and adventurous work from both companies. Live performances include Fancy (caitlin elliott dance collective), Imitations of Intimacy (detour dance), and a collaborative piece between the two companies. The evening will also feature the world premiere screening of detour dance's newest dance film, Pedestrian Crossing.

CEDC is a contemporary dance company with a highly physical, athletic, acrobatic style with a bit of a flare for the dramatic. The CEDC was created to use movement as a way to propel conversation, highlight eccentricities in people, and bring to life emotions that are intrinsic to being alive. There is a large variety to the CEDC style because, as we all know, sometimes words say things best, sometimes movement says it best, and sometimes it is a combination of the two. The performers are known to sometimes talk, sing, and dance all in the same piece. This is the inaugural season for the CEDC and they will have a home season in the san francisco bay area during the spring and summer of 2012, as well as a few touring destinations throughout the year.

Caitlin Elliott is a Bay Area based contemporary dancer and choreographer. She began dancing at the age of five and has been a lover of movement ever since. Growing up in Colorado she studied tap, jazz, ballet, and musical theater with Betsy Mcclenahan and was also a competitive gymnast for seven years. In 2005, she moved to San Francisco to study dance at the University of San Francisco and has the the privilege of studying and performing with Nina Haft, Natalie Greene, Amie Dowling, Jo Kreiter, Megan Nicely, and Randee Paufve. She began choreographing in 2007 and her love of athleticism and drama inform her movement style and choreography.

Led by Kat Cole and Eric Garcia, detour dance is a contemporary dance company that tackles the idiosyncrasies and quirky tenderness of human relationships set against the backdrop of everyday life. Located in San Francisco, detour dance magnifies these already existing subtleties, present in a city where the smallest interactions go unnoticed. They explore the inconspicuous through multi-media, physically-integrated, inter-generational, and site-specific work, creating an environment where their collaborators are just as curious. Known for their eccentric and recognizable gestures and contrasting full-bodied contemporary technique, they encourage audiences to reevaluate who can dance and where art happens.

Kat Cole and Eric Garcia represent San Francisco's newest generation of choreographers and performers. Kat and Eric presented works throughout the Bay Area prior to the creation of a company name in 2010 and, after collaborating on their first piece, Inhabiting Spaces, they quickly realized how well they jive together. Almost immediately following the company's debut performance at CounterPULSE, Kat and Eric received support from the Theatre Bay Area CA$H Grant, became fiscally sponsored through Dancers' Group, and were accepted into dance and film festivals throughout the country. In February 2012, they were awarded 1st place in the SF Weekly's Masterminds Competition, which recognizes emerging visual, dance and film artists in San Francisco.
