Asians & Affirmative Action: Implications of Fisher v. UT on API Community
Fifth in the Asian Law Caucus Summer Brown Bag Series Friday, August 3, 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM 55 Columbus Ave. (betw. Montgomery & Kearny / Washington & Jackson) Map of location http://tinyurl.com/7nnunjh (# 1, 8, 8X, 10, 12 buses) Winnie Kao, Employment Rights’ Staff Attorney Grace Lee, Chinese for Affirmative Action Later this year, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear the case of Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin. Fisher involves a challenge to the constitutionality of the University of Texas' consideration of race as one factor in a holistic, individualized review of about 25 percent of its undergraduate applicants' admissions profiles. The Asian American Center for Advancing Justice will be filing an amicus brief in the case supporting race-conscious admissions. We will discuss how Fisher affects Asian and Pacific Islanders (APIs), the arguments made in Advancing Justice's amicus brief, and the question of APIs and affirmative action generally.
