Why I am Voting for Barry Hermanson for Congress

by Green
This election is different, and so is Barry Hermanson. Because of the new “Top Two” primary system, the top two candidates in the June 5 primary will be on the ballot in November, regardless of party affiliation. Are you tired of the total lack of any real debate in the general election between Nancy Pelosi and some retrograde Republican candidate? I am.

I am.

Whether or not you like the new “Top Two” primary system, that is the way it is this year. And it is a real possibility that Green Party candidate Barry Hermanson could be facing Nancy Pelosi in November, if Barry comes in second in the primary.

Nobody believes that Barry would beat Pelosi in the general election. She has the all the Democratic Party money machinery on her side. But, just for once, wouldn’t you like to see Pelosi and the Democrats forced into a real debate about:

  • · The massive expropriation of our tax dollars by the Pentagon and the military?
  • · Putting people back to work with a federal jobs program like Franklin Roosevelt’s WPA, rather than corporate-side “stimulus” deals?
  • · Real health care reform like Medicare for All?
  • · Ending the Bush tax cuts, spiking tax loopholes for the corporations, and taxing the rich?

Or would you rather get another stale debate about voting for the lesser-of-two-evils between Pelosi and some wacko Republican?

I have another reason for supporting Barry – he has been on the picket line at Hotel Frank again and again and again. He doesn’t do this because he is trolling for votes at our small hotel. He does it because he supports workers’ rights, just like he did when he co-authored San Francisco’s landmark minimum wage law, and co-chaired the San Francisco Living Wage Coalition.

I haven’t seen Pelosi anywhere near the Hotel Frank picket line. I don’t remember her getting down in the trenches and fighting for increased wages for the lowest paid workers in this city. I guess we are all just small potatoes to her.

I’m going to keep this simple. You can vote for Pelosi and business-as-usual, or you can vote for Barry because a second-place finish for him would change the conversation for all of us.

Check out Barry’s website at www.barryhermanson.org, then do your civic duty.

Haven't you learned yet? If voting could change anything, it would be illegal.

Now that Corporations are free to outspend the public to buy elections (one dollar: one vote), the system has completely broken down.

There are no longer even a pretense of "Popular Elections".

In 2008, Cindy Sheehan was on the November ballot as an independent candidate against Nancy Pelosi, but Pelosi still wouldn't debate Sheehan.

They can hurl the propaganda at you, but they cannot yet put a gun to your head to vote for a D or an R.

Voting for any party but D or R, and against any D or R promotional ballot measure, is still YOUR CHOICE.

No one can touch that.

Use it while you can. Tomorrow, who knows.

In local elections, you can vote for 3rd parties because there is enough people to win, but not for national elections. When November comes around, you really don't have a choice but to vote for Obama. There aren't enough people voting nationwide to win any 3rd party candidate. That's politics. Numbers matter. If Romney wins, the cuts and austerity and the move towards a fascist state will accelerate much faster than Obama. Romney cannot win. Romney and the Republicans will destroy this country. We need to vote for Obama, not because he will make things better; rather, it will buy us time while we organize.
Please remember that the U.S. Presidency is NOT determined by the nationwide popular vote -- rather, it's determined by the electoral vote, which is "winner take all", state by state. And because California is one of the most Democratic-voting states in the country, Obama is going to win California regardless, so it's actually fine to encourage "complete" 3rd party voting here! For example, the Green or Peace and Freedom Presidential vote in California is usually just 1% or 2% of the vote, while the Democrats usually win by 10% to 15%. However, if the (progressive) 3rd parties could actually double their Presidential vote, then that would be significant (from a combined maximum of about 3% to a new combined total of 6%) -- and the Democrats' margin of victory would still be 7% to 12% over the Republicans.

In addition, if you have any further concerns about voting your "true preference" in the California Presidential race in November, just follow the California polls that will be published during October -- they are rarely off by more than a couple of percentage points. For example, right now Obama is ahead of Romney by 15% in California. So if the (final) election were held today, it would be totally safe for all (true) progressives to vote Green or Preace and Freedom -- at the worst, a very significant doubling of the (progressive) 3rd party vote would drop the margin of victory for Obama down to a (still) very healthy 12% here!
