Interview with Socialist-Feminist Presidential Candidate Stephen Durham
Rubble interviews Freedom Socialist Party Presidential candidate Stephen Durham, who is running for President and vying for the Peace and Freedom Party nomination in the California primary. Durham was in San Francisco as part of a whistle stop tour he terms the “un-millionaire” campaign. (31 minutes).
Listen now:
Durham is the New York City branch organizer of the Harlem-based Freedom Socialist Party. He terms the campaign as an opportunity for voters to choose an alternative to a “rigged political system”. He is enthusiastic about letting voters know that real solutions do exist to the mounting social and economic problems we face, and that the real solutions are anti-capitalist. He has long fought racial and sexual discrimination. Able to speak three languages, he has been active building ties with workers and feminists in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The platform includes full employment; government that helps the needy, not the greedy; multicultural education for all ages; ending the war on drugs; freedom from discrimination, including dismantling ICE and Homeland Security; repeal the Patriot Act and indefinite military detention, dismantle the FBI, outlaw police spying and disruptions of free speech activities; solidarity with workers worldwide, including bringing all U.S. troops home and nationalizing US polluting corporations.
Christina Lopez, a Seattle-based Freedom Socialist Party member, is the Vice Presidential candidate. She is a long-time fighter for immigrant and reproductive rights, and is currently organizing a grassroots campaign against the Washington State budget cuts. She intends to offer a real feminist alternative to the ridiculous Democratic Party hype that the Obama administration has been or might be good for women’s rights.
