March 8, International Women's Day in the Bay Area includes plans for a Golden Gate Bridge march and several protests, but there is one official after party planned: Women's Day SF. Yoshi's in San Francisco is the swank location for an unprecedented International Women's Day show. Benefiting two free rallies/festivals, EarthDaySF and PeaceDaySF, a phenomenal array of headline acts and speakers plan to give an intimate private performance in the luxury of Yoshi's. "For that special feminist in your life, this is the one ticket guaranteed to please!" promises event organizer MonaLisa Wallace. Brief speakers, including esteemed feminist Pat Maginnis, promise to update on the latest feminist issues from cosmetic safety, genetically modified food labeling and contraception.
Music acts include: Janis Joplin's original band Big Brother & the Holding Company; PAMELA PARKER; Non Stop Bhangra; Mondo Loko; and in the lounge: Valerie Orth, Lesley Grant, and Ziva. "International Women's Day celebrates the movement while raising consciousness at the same time," says rocker Pamela Parker. Celebrated annually around the world, Women's Day has been celebrated on March 8 for 101 years. Event sponsors are: National Organization for Women, SF Chapter, Planned Parenthood, Code Pink and the Bay Area Coalition for Reproductive Rights.
