What: Liberate the Commons - Rally, March, and Open Housing Occupation
SAN FRANCISCO— In solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street West day of action the affinity group, Liberate the Commons, will rally, march, and hold a public “open occupation” of a vacant residential housing building. There will be a convergence at the San Francisco State building this Friday at 5:45pm.
The affinity group will reclaim a vacant building for the 99% with the long-term goal of maintaining a space that serves public interests over private interests. In San Francisco, the misappropriation of property by the 1% has left 32,000 units vacant, while current census data indicates that there are 11,000 documented homeless persons subsisting on our streets. The affinity group aims to elucidate the corrupt and unjust eviction and foreclosure processes that force countless people from their living and work spaces for profit. Reclamation of the space is done in recognition of this injustice.
This action will include live music, food, and educational speakers from housing rights organizations in San Francisco. They invite all to join in Liberating the Commons, both to raise awareness on these issues and reclaim this space for the 99% and to celebrate the Occupy Wall Street West day of action.
The organizers encourage all to attend and support Liberate the Commons. Any individuals are welcome to partake in this action. Each individual is encouraged to determine their own level of risk. The organizers state that there will be low, medium, and high risk roles associated with this action. The organizers encourage people to assume a role they are most comfortable with in supporting Liberate the Commons.
