Occupy Santa Cruz Occupies Home in Foreclosure, Continues Bank Demonstrations

by Alex Darocy (alex [at] alexdarocy.com)
Continuing its focus on the major banking institutions and their relationship to the 99%, Occupy Santa Cruz has been conducting a variety of bank related actions. On Saturday, January 7, the group held a 'Move Your Money' demonstration outside of Chase bank at the corner of Ocean and Water streets, and currently a home in foreclosure is being occupied by the group with its owner on the Westside of Santa Cruz.

On Saturday, the home in foreclosure was used by Occupy Santa Cruz as the meeting location for its foreclosure working group, and occupiers have been cleaning up the home's backyard, preparing it for tents and more occupiers. The home's kitchen will soon be available for those wishing to cook for Occupy Santa Cruz, and the home's living room will be available to host Occupy Santa Cruz working group meetings. The location of the home will be announced publicly soon.

Approximately a dozen community members attended the Move Your Money demonstration at Chase bank on Saturday. In addition to waving signs in front of the bank, members of Occupy Santa Cruz handed out fliers that listed the phone numbers and addresses of several local community credit unions.

Great job Alex! I am glad we have local media to cover these events, as we all know the Paid media does not cover anything well- or in a truthful manner. Also, that chick in the first pic with the Stop Foreclosures sign is hot. LMAO! <3 u guys! :)

Sigh... I read on the formerly-known-as-#OccupySantaCruz blog that it was consensed to write a letter to Police Chief Vogel in re 'slander'.

My suggestion on-site: "Do you REALLY suppose he gives a flying fuck, or is this what passes for direct action in your progressive circle-jerk? He (or one of his henchmen) attends the city council meetings you know? Or perhaps there aren’t enough people left in your formerly-known-as-#OccupySantaCruz group to swarm him and force his underlings to extract him from the city council chambers under escort."

To put it QUITE PLAINLY, If you don't even have the cohones to show up and physically confront one over-the-hill desk-jockey police officer, exactly what will the foreclosure occupiers do when they're swarmed by a squad of Sheriffs with a notice to quit the premises?

Actually, a group of us did confront Vogel personally and his praetorian guard of seven armed riot-clad officers on December 8th in front of the Parks and Recreation Department. (Earlier there were at least twice that number, I'm told, stalking City Hall waiting for OSC-er's to set up a tent or protest the earlier destruction of the Campground)

The staff had locked the doors of those offices as well as those at City Hall in the middle of the day during business hours.

His officers surrounded Alex Darocy; he threatened me with "investigation" for my presence at 75 River St., citation for "jaywalking", and refused to specify what emergency justified the destruction of the survival space of 100-200 people at San Lorenzo Park earlier that day.

The point of the two letters (there are two of them now) is to document and expose Vogel's behavior. I hope to have an attorney send them off in order to publicly challenge Vogel's smearjob.

See my earlier report on this "Courthouse Steps Now Free Speech-Free at Night; SCPD Threats Downtown; Offices Close" at http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2011/12/09/18702196.php (specifically under "INTIMIDATING AND COSTLY DISPLAY OF POLICE FORCE AT PARKS AND RECREATION OFFICE, CITY HALL, AND ON THE STREET ".

I didn't initiate a proposed "March of Shame" the next week because no one contacted me.

I agree with RazorRay that angry letters by themselves are echoes in the wilderness.
