#OWS, pepper spray, book sharing, tents, mic checks and protest signs: Since September, the Occupy movement has staked a claim in every Facebook feed, almost every news program and in literally more than 100 major cities in the United States alone. Using the tools of collective assembly, occupiers have mobilized thousands in their fight for global change and against the richest 1 percent, but so many people are still less than sure what Occupy is all about. What have been the strategies and intent of this people-powered movement? Now that they have the world’s attention, what are they going to do with it? What is driving the movement forward?

Join us for a 2-hour forum, including a panel discussion with Oakland Mayor Jean Quan and Occupy leaders to tackle the what, why and future of Occupy’s mission to channel change. Then we’ll get our own Occupy on, with a break out discussion and resolution reception.

Time: 6:30 p.m. check-In, 7 p.m. program, 8 p.m. breakout discussion groups, reception and report back

I don't know who this guy is who says he's from Occupy Oakland but i find it incredible that he is willing to share a platform with a Mayor who is responable for the Police attack on Oct. 25 that, among other things, resulted in the near murder of Scott Olsen !
And if any ""progressive democrats '' reading this whine that she's ordered an ''independent investigation '''into that incident don't bother ! As Scott relayed on MSNBC's '' The Ed Show '' He has been told NOTHING about this so called investigation , nothing about it's progress or who even the identify of these ''independent investigators' ! He hasn't even been interviewed .
The Cops responable for that crime should be publicly identified, fired , and prosecuted . Also the cops who carried out the savage beating of Kayvan Saleigh on the evening of Nov. 2.
by In agreement with above commenter
Absolutely 'I don't think so', you hit the nail right on the head! It is obsurd to share a platform with the mayor who ordered the attack on us. As if she is an occupier, or has an expert opinion with where the Occupy movement should go from here. As for the organizer from Occupy Oakland Tim Simmons. Well, I know Tim to a certain degree, and am kind of suprised that he would be on stage with her too. After all, he claims to be an anarchist. Politics make strange bedfellows I suppose.

The show would go on anyway without a "representative" of Occupy Oakland. At least he'll be there to present Occupy's viewpoint. He can call out the mayor to her face. However it should be noted, that the occupiers of which there are two (altho one will be on SKYPE from New York, are being doubly or possibly triply out-"gunned". George Lakoff is a supporter of the national Democratic Party leadership.

does tim not realize that quan will want to discuss the racial demographics of OO or that people think that the people are OO are not from the bay?? tim is a straight white man not from oakland--i dont even think he is from norcal. why does tim feel the need to hold so much space? this is damaging.
by step forward/step back?
this is just typical of the problems with oo in general
by occupied
hey check the actual site for the commonwealth club! Tim isn't listed on there. some other OO people are... that panel is gonna suck.

FYI, the post has been edited.
by No one speaks for us without us.
Am I the only person who thinks anyone appearing on this panel deserves their just desserts?

Quan was the mayor when Occupy Oakland was attacked. Twice. She has conducted a campaign against it since its first days. Read her comments over the last week while the West Coast Port Blockade was underway. When she appeared before the General Assembly to speak she was booed off the platform before her turn even came up.

No one can speak for Occupy Oakland without going through the General Assembly. If someone attempts to do so they will be denounced by the group - that was decided over a month ago.

Occupy SF - here's your chance to Occupy the Commonwealth. I'm sure that there are good toilets there.
by i don't think so
-- We shut down the Port of Oakland on 12/12 !!! NOT in opposition to the Longshore, Port Truckers, Teamsters etc but in solidarity with them . Focusing on the supporting the besieged ILWU #21 in Longview Washington and the 26 fired Port truckers at the Goldman Sachs majority owned SSA terminal .
i think in general someone doesn't have to get GA approval to speak at a event as long as they make it clear that they are speaking in a personal capacity not as a rep of OO. But the question is should someone , anyone, from our movement should share a platform with, not say a Mild , moderate supporter but a Outright enemy of the movement ?
MAYBE if it was billed as a debate between supporters and Opponents of the Occupied Movement that would be different .
But it isn't . The spin is that it's just a respectful dialogue between supporters . That's a Lie .
