Occupy UC: Architecture Students Against Police Violence

by Berkeley Occupier
The violence used by UC Berkeley police sparked a campus-wide anger. That sentiment grew stronger as UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau released his oddly-phrased, double-negative statement that locking arm was "not non-violent" protest.

Over 500 UC Berkeley faculty members have signed an open letter against police violence. A growing number of faculty have been attending, or dropping in on, General Assembly meetings. Students and Grad-Students from the different departments are engaging in the civil discourse in ways which reflect their respective areas of study.

Students from the Department of Architecture rallied as a lead-in to Thursday night's General Assembly. "As designers of the public realm," the students expressed that they felt "furious about the administration's draconian reductions on the freedom of public space". The gathered "to reclaim that public space", Sproul Plaza, which the UC is controlling through the campus police.

With backgrounds including visual design, the students arrived with a creative symbol of resistance: two tents held afloat by clusters of balloons, safe from the hands of the police below. The procession was lead by a large floating banner reading: "OUR SPACE". Other students in the crowd carried smaller signs: "FRANK LLOYD FIGHT", "DESIGN FOR OCCUPY", "THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING", "WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN TO OCCUPY". To have tents back on the plaza, even if only in a conceptual way, was a successful rallying point for the evening.
