Military trade unions and soldiers councils go back more than a hundred years. Initiated by radical political groups, labor unions or soldiers themselves, they have had an impact on the political, economic and social conditions of numerous armed forces around the world. Highlighted will be the stuggles in organizing, their diverse forms, social benefits, working conditions and political roles. The U.S., Denmark and South Africa will be examined. Also discussed are the orientations of various socialist groups regarding military unionization and the relevance of this organizing as a contemporary Marxist project.
