Daily Show idea about relocating Occupy Oakland being debated by Mayor and City Council

by life imitates art
After Oakland police raided the camp at Oscar Grant Plaza then proceeded to attack marchers in the street for hours on end later that evening, Jon Stewart of the Daily Show jokingly suggested the following day on October 26th that Occupy Oakland be offered space at Jack London Square or the Oakland Arena instead of the plaza in front of City Hall. It is now coming to light on November 7th that Mayor Jean Quan and various City Council Members have taken the suggestion to heart as they consider forcibly moving the occupation away from downtown to the Oakland Coliseum, Grand Lake, or other areas. If the the city follows through with these discussions remains to be seen. Law and order council members such as Larry Reid and Ignacio De La Fuente have been adamantly opposed to occupation encampments anywhere from the very start. Others council members representing wealthier districts such as Jane Brunner, Patricia Kernighan, and Libby Schaaf have not been overly friendly about Occupy Oakland to say the least. Councilperson Desley Brooks originally had a tent in the plaza but removed it after the first warning notice from the city of impending arrests was delivered on October 21st. Nancy Nadel appears to be open to a continued Occupy Oakland, in another location, based on information surfacing today.

"Zennie" at SFGate, who hates Indybay by the way but frequently references this website, claims to have received an email from a city insider who asked that the email not be forwarded. Zennie chose to publish the unattributed email anyway. Note that Zennie frequently gets ahead of stories publishing things that he later retracts. He once ran with a story about medical coroners having found drugs hidden in Oscar Grant's rectum, for instance.

Here's the supposed email:

    Zennie, you have been doing a great job covering Occupy Oakland from different angles, and you understand what it’s like
for us in the Mayor’s office to have to make decisions for the
whole city. I thought you would want to see this. I am very frustrated with how we’re communicating to the media and I think
 people need to know what is really going on, that we do a
plan to fix the problem, and people need to be patient and help us.

    Mayor’s possible sites for Occupy relocation. DO NOT FORWARD.

    D1: Not many parks in D1. Looking at Safeway on College parking lot. Brunner likes encampment’s support for small businesses
and proximity to BART. Finding out if asphalt will be
issue – or if it will actually be safer with the rain.

    D2: Grand Lake – Space at Splash Pad. Pamela Drake from BID supports camp, Grand Lake Theater too. Plenty of space for
campers, some protection from rain under freeway. On
border with District 3 so may get support from Nadel.

    D3: Nadel offered to try to expand existing homeless camp in Clawson. May have some resistance from campers regarding
this location.

    D4: Woodminster – plenty of space, away from neighbors, not used in winter. Transportation will be difficult, talking to Mary
at AC Transit about shuttles. Schaaf supportive of encampment.

    D5-7: Several large parks or parcels in several neighborhoods and possibly Coliseum parking lot. Will be difficult to move
 camp here due to Councilmember resistance. Trying to move to D1-4.

she claims to support the goals, just do it quietly without causing a ruckus and in the daytime only. in other words, march around in circles all you like and make no real difference. she's got some Richie Riches in Monclair to look after

An Open Letter to Occupy Oakland: I Support Your Movement but Stop Harming Our City (Community Voices)
Libby Schaaf Tue, 8 Nov at 9:10am

Just as we are asking banks and large corporations to act responsibly, Occupy Oakland must act responsibly as well. The camping and other late-night activities of Occupy Oakland have gotten to the point where they are doing more harm than good for the 99%-residents of Oakland.

Occupy Oakland is:

Driving business and business prospects from downtown Oakland (last week, three businesses pulled out of downtown lease negotiations, including one with 100 employees, while some restaurant receipts are down 50-60%);

Costing our cash-strapped city money it doesn’t have (to date, more than $1million in extra services and supplies);

Causing threats to public health and safety that have gone unaddressed after multiple written warnings -- including failed fire and health inspections, possession of weapons, sexual assault and drug overdose -- while the camp adopts policies effectively prohibiting communication with officials;

Diverting Oakland’s scarce city services and resources, especially police, away from neighborhoods that need them, including one night when 179 calls for police to 911 went without response; and

Providing cover and opportunity to anarchists who’ve trashed our beloved city -- destroying property and causing injury.

I support the goals of Occupy Wall Street to address income inequality, and appreciate that Occupy Oakland has been part of this critical national movement, which has given the 99% of citizens suffering from declining wealth some hope that together we can change things.

However, I’d like to see Occupy Oakland transform into a lawful, sustainable and broad-based movement that effects change, without harming our City or its residents. I hope to see Occupy Oakland:

- Allow Oakland and Alameda County to offer available social services and shelter to Occupy Oakland participants who need them;

- Remove the Ogawa encampment as soon as possible;

- End and disavow lawlessness, vandalism and violence; and

- Identify community venues where those interested in continuing the positive work of the Occupy Movement can continue to meet and work, preferably during daylight hours.

Many in the Occupy Wall St. movement will tell you it was the lessening of laws, the removal of government regulation, which allowed banks and corporations to unjustly prosper. Oakland needs to enforce the rule of law on banks and demonstrators alike.

We need to do this clearly and consistently, and move on to the business of cleaning up our downtown and getting on with being the wonderful, positive city we know we are.
