Dear OCCUPY SF-- Are nudists welcome??
[ Explanation by TBL:
At least three nude persons [including Lloyd] have
visited the Occupy SF camp in recent weeks,
when it was at the Fed Reserve on Market.
On Oct. 11, an individual complained to police about ONE of these nudes,
George Davis; and so the police cited [ticketed] him.
SF police don't usually give tickets for mere nudity,
UNLESS an individual complains.
(This citizen complaint was NOT done by the group;
but by one person.)
At the time, individual opinions varied. -- TBL]

Below, George asks
what the group consensus,
if any,
is.

Are nudists welcome at Occupy San Francisco events?
........................
October 15, 2011
Hi:
I’m George Davis, a well-known urban nudist. I teach a course, “History of Free Body Culture Movements in Europe and America.” I have written two books and numerous magazine articles on the subject of “Nude is not lewd. It’s natural.” I have been written-up in many newspaper articles and interviewed on TV shows in relation to the work that my friends and I have done to make nudity a recognized as legal in San Francisco.
On Tuesday, October 11, I received a telephone message from an Occupy San Francisco representative telling me that a couple of nudists had been coming down there and inviting me to join you all. I made a visit to the encampment in front of the Federal Reserve building on Thursday evening, October 12.
Imagine my surprise at being cited for Public Nuisance, from a citizen’s complaint filed by a member of Occupy San Francisco.[...]
Does Occupy San Francisco support non-violent freedom of expression
and the end of censorship?
.....
By the way, I am not campaigning for nudist rights, we all have them here in San Francisco whether you want to exercise them or not. Urban nudist rights are recognized by the SF courts, politicians, and police. More on SF nudity can be found at http://www.wikipedia.com -- please see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_nudity_in_San_Francisco
Since people at Occupy San Francisco tell me that decisions there are made by consensus, I am seeking a “consensus welcome” or a “consensus rejection” to Occupy San Francisco events and activities as an urban nudist.
After the citation was issued, most of the Occupy San Francisco people around asked me to return.
A few mentioned some objections (academic?) to my presence.
For example, “What about the children?” My rebuttal is my standing offer of over 3 ½ years of $1000 to anyone who can write an intelligent 500 word essay telling “What harm would befall a child who sees a nude adult?” To date, I have received zero submissions.
Another person asked,
“With all the problems in the world, why do I choose nudist rights as important?”
There is an irony in that I don’t think that public nudity should be a big deal, but that is a totally unrealistic perspective. However nudist rights obviously are. Isn’t acceptance of your body and the bodies of others important? Isn’t non-violent freedom of expression important?
Isn’t freedom from censorship important?
[....]
By the way, I have heard reports that there is nudity at
Occupy Wall Street. Public nudity has opened up recently in New York City. Fully nude body painting is now permitted outdoors in Times Square.
This is no longer an “Only in San Francisco” thing.
So, I am now awaiting a “consensus” invitation to visit and join in demonstrations or activities.
Naturally,
George Davis,

Hi George
Nudity is legal in San Francisco so we can't stop anyone.
The informal feeling from most is that nudity is ok at OccupySF events and in camp.
However I can't give you a consensus reply as consensus can only be reached on an issue if it is brought up at a general assembly.
I know we have been contacted by at least one parent concerned about not bringing their kids down if there was going to be nudity.
But one can not speak for all and you are as much a member of OccupySF as the person who tried to issue the citation.
We welcome you to attend GA and bring up nudity
to clear up the issue via consensus.
Apologies for not responding to your first email, we are very behind and still working out our admin processes.
Hope to see you at future events.
OccupySF
