Occupy Oakland Grows and Builds Out Infrastructure on Day Two, 10/11/11: photos

by Dave Id
On the second day of the Oakland occupation, occupiers began to get a feel for the routines that will carry them through their indefinite stay in "Oscar Grant Plaza". While Boston witnessed 141 occupiers arrested today, Oakland police did not intrude upon Frank Ogawa plaza and occupiers were able to build out the foundation that will help carry things forward. Workgroups met and further fleshed out plans to enhance their various projects. Major donations in food stuffs and facilities were signs of the strong support the occupation enjoys from the wider community. The Oakland Education Association teachers' union and the SEIU donated at least four porta-potties and one large portable sink. Everett & Jones also donated enough food to feed people for hours. Hiphop artist Lupe Fiasco donated food, supplies, tables, tents, and a generator, visiting occupiers in person during the evening General Assembly shortly before he was set to perform just blocks away at the Fox Theater. Numerous supporters came forward with many needed supplies, including their own volunteered time. Bicycle-generated power will come online on day three. Everywhere you look, not only are the number of tents continuing to increase, but the occupation grows more capable by the hour.

Plans are for a movie on the people's resistance movement in Oaxaca at 9pm on Wednesday and hiphop performances by Ras Ceylon, Boots Riley, and others on Thursday evening. Dinner will be served at 5pm daily. There are a number of working groups to get involved with to make the occupation work. Just contact someone doing something you might be interested in helping with to get involved. Donations are always welcome as well.

Mayor Jean Quan chimed in by saying Occupy Oakland could stay as long as people respected the large oak tree in the plaza and did not urinate underneath it.

Does the '' Occupy Oakland ''camp have a veggie meals only ? I hope not . While there are certainly some working class Vegitarians most people facing foreclosues or rental evictions like eating the occasional dead animal or fish .
Seriously Imposing a counter culture lifestyle diet could hurt our movement .
