Since 2001, Black Mesa Weavers for Life and Land, a network of Navajo weavers and sheepherders, has hosted an annual wool-buy that supports the continuation and viability of sheep lifeways in rural communities on the Navajo Nation in what is now known as north-eastern Arizona. This past summer, Navajo artisans from the involved communities added fiber arts workshops to the wool-buy, which included plant dye traditions, spindle spinning, braiding and traditional ecological knowledge. Come and learn about this annual event -- good stories, beautiful photos, and how you can support the future of these fiber art traditions.
Cost: Sliding Scale: $5-$20 (Proceeds help fund the community workshops for next summer). Info: 510-548-2220 x233, http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/202160. Wheelchair accessible.
