Columbus is not a Hero: US Wealth Founded on Slavery and Genocide

Organizer/Author:
Uhuru Solidarity Movement Oakland
Location Details:
Niebyl Proctor Library, 6501 Telegraph Ave, Oakland

All progressive people, allies of the black, indigenous and other oppressed peoples:

As we get close to the celebration of Columbus Day, many cities have opted to celebrate indigenous peoples day, recognizing that Columbus carried out genocide against the peoples of these so-called Americas.

We will study the origins of US wealth in the enslavement of African people and the stolen land of indigenous populations.
Then, we will do our final outreach push for the events for A Day in Solidarity with African People.

We are building A Day in Solidarity with African People right here in Oakland, to be held on Thursday, October 13th as part of a national fundraising campaign to raise $10,000 towards the Uhuru Movement programs.

At this meeting, we will discuss the economic crisis in terms of a system built on the resources of the peoples of the planet and the growing resistance to colonial occupation and oppression.

After that, we will get down to the work to build the events for A Day in Solidarity with African People!

All around the world, people are taking the pledge of solidarity with reparations, justice and self-determination for AFrican people.

The problem in Oakland is not the youth or the so-called gangs. The problem in Oakland is the public policy of police containment of the African and Mexican communities where you have military forces with specialized weapons surrounding neighborhoods in East and West Oakland. You have police containment in the face of poverty, unemployment, oppression. You have America's other war.

We reject a military solution that continues the criminalization of African and Mexican people and call for economic development, justice and reparations!
