Egyptian activist Ahmed Salah will speak on Sunday August 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the Resource Center about the movement that led to the ouster of Egypt's former President, Hosni Mubarak. Salah has been actively working since 2004 to change the Mubarak regime using active nonviolence. He is a co-founder and key organizer of the 6th of April Youth Movement in Egypt that helped bring about Mubarak’s fall from power.

Salah will describe various strategies that were learned, developed, and implemented by activists and civil society groups in the years leading up to the January 25 protests. The movement that was called the “Egyptian Movement for Change” or “Kifaya,” (enough). succeeded in forcing Mubarak out of power after 18 days of nonviolent mass action. Salah was a key strategist to the movement until a few months ago.

There has been, so far, no substantial change in who rules Egypt, except for a strengthening of the power of the faction of capital that is entrenched in the military.

There has never been a case where capitalist class rule has been overthrown, or even weakened except perhaps momentarily, by non-violent action. Thus, those who try to impose non-violence on the struggles of the oppressed are objectively agents of the oppressor.
