If you Samba you Salsa! If you Salsa you Samba! Sarava Zamba & Salsa Dura. Samba & salsa lessons before each band. This musical cultural project showcases both a Samba band and a Salsa band that perform two of the most exotic danceable rhythms in Latin America. Although the rhythms are very different, both bands discovered that they are not so far apart when it comes to making people dance in a passionate way full of happiness. Sarava Zamba (www.myspace.com/saravazamba and www.facebook.com/saravazamba) is a Brazilian ensemble based out of Berkeley, CA and founded in 2009. Our music can be described as a high energy Brazilian fusion that mixes tropical groove with hints of Samba, funk, and popular dance music. The music of Sarava Zamba is fun, filled with a festive tropical vibe. Sarava Zamba founding members include Leo Lobo/ vocals, acoustic guitar and percussion; Silvio Correia/ vocals, acoustic guitar and percussion, and Jair Silva/ back vocal and percussion. The band also has a drummer, an electric guitar player, a saxophone player and an additional back vocalist. Salsa Dura (orquestasalsadura.com, www.myspace.com/orquestasalsadura) is all of the hard pounding, and Barrio-conscious lyrics from the 70’s. We keep the tradition alive with our own original songs that can be just as experimental and open to new ideas as the first wave of Salsa Music coming out of New York, with our West Coast version. You can hear us playing our versions of such standards as “El Malo’ by Willie Colon as well as the jibaro-tinged original ‘Un Jibaro en la Ciudad’. Who is Salsa Dura? Formed May 2007 and based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Orquesta Salsa Dura’s founding members include musicians Orlando Morales on Timbales, Scott Brown on Cuatro (who also composes for the band), Mike Parykaza on Trumpet and David Barrios on Trombone.
